Annually, #GivingTuesday celebrates the power of community across the country at the local level. Kingmakers of Oakland established the Jean Yonemura Wing Memorial Scholarship fund to honor the life and work of an important ally to the organization who contributed so much to uplifting BIPOC communities in the Bay Area.
Throughout her life, Jean Yonemura Wing fought for social justice. She devoted much of her career to the transformation of the Oakland Public Schools so that it would deliver on its promise to make educational equity, excellence, and empowerment real in every school, every classroom, every day, for every student, no matter the student’s citizenship, race, economic background, ethnicity, language, or religion.
The Jean Yonemura Wing Memorial Scholarship awards are given to young men affiliated with KOO who evidence the potential to make the same lifelong commitment to advancing equity and social justice.
This year’s winners, Jordon Chatmon (SF State), Asa Jerome Gourdine (Morehouse), Rahsaan Smith (Morehouse), and James Bell (Santa Clara), embody the values and vision of both Jean Wing and the Kingmakers family. As we enter the season of giving, we ask you to consider donating to this worthy cause as well as share this opportunity to any other Kings in the making who you may know.
