GivingTuesday 2022: The Power of Investing in Black-Led Organizations Like Kingmakers of Oakland
We hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving this year – leaving with full bellies and even fuller hearts. This Tuesday is GivingTuesday, a global movement held on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. What started as a simple idea to encourage people to do good now generates yearly donations to help nonprofits continue making a positive impact.
But donations are often inequitable. A funder of ours, Salesforce, notes, “As income and wealth inequalities widen, advancing access to capital for people of color and underrepresented groups is critical to closing the wealth gap. Black and Latinx nonprofit leaders receive only about 4% of philanthropic funding in the U.S., though they make up approximately 10% of nonprofit leadership nationwide…The unrestricted net assets of Black-led organizations are 76% smaller than their white-led counterparts, ultimately contributing to the systemic underinvestment in these communities.”
We hope that on this GivingTuesday you help break this divide and uplift a Black-led organization like ours working to improve the educational and life outcomes of Black boys. Donations to Kingmakers of Oakland support our work with school districts, educators, youth and families to rebuild the systems, structures, conditions, and culture of school so Black students can thrive. Your support will ensure our ability to Engage, Encourage, and Empower the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
