5/31/24 Seattle, WA – On a beautiful sunny day in Seattle, Washington, a magical event unfolded at the historic Chief Sealth High School. Black Families came together in force for The Fourth Annual “Crowning Ceremony” which brought together Kingmakers of Oakland and the Seattle Unified School District to celebrate the accomplishments of students who have participated in the KOO classes all year. The event was graced by city officials, Seattle Unified’s Superintendent Dr. Jones, students, parents, and community members, all gathered to honor the dedication and achievements of our kings and queens.
“The Crowning Ceremony was not just to celebrate our Kings, but to honor the journey of an incredible school year,” stated Brother Marcus Bradford, Aki Kurose Middle School facilitator. “May we cherish this moment as a testament to our perseverance and unity.”
This special time of the year allows us to pay homage to our student’s achievements while celebrating our culture and acknowledging the traditions that bind us in spirit and community. Students arrived suited and booted in their freshest shoes, stylish jackets, and ties. It was a sight to behold. They were “dripping” with the latest fashion trends, ready to impress. Young people took the time to take pictures with each other, family members, and teachers as they were beaming with pride about the day and their accomplishments.
Seattle’s exceptional facilitators from the various schools were present to crown their kings and queens, recognizing the hard work and dedication demonstrated throughout the year. There was an amazing rap performance from Franklin High School’s own Brother Prince. He brought all the energy and swag to the stage to bless the crowd with an amazing song that spoke to his passion for the future.
Amazing BBQ was provided and families were lined up ready to eat and enjoy themselves. It was a moment for these young stars to shine, but more importantly, it was a day filled with joy, celebration, and a strong sense of community. Every detail was thoughtfully attended to, and KOO played a vital role in celebrating the dreams and aspirations of our youth.
